I've never done yoga before in my life? Can I do this?
This beginner's yoga class is designed for everyone, whether or not you've ever tried yoga before. Everyone does the same postures, but works to their own potential. You will find beginners and veterans side by side. All you have to do is try!
Why is the room so hot?
There are a few reasons for the heat. (1) Warm muscles are elastic and less susceptible to injury. (2) The heat enhances vasodilatation, so more blood is delivered to the muscles which brings more oxygen to the muscles and allows for greater removal of waste products like lactic acid and carbon dioxide. (3) The heat allows oxygen to detach from hemoglobin more easily. It is oxygen that fuels the process of using stored energy. (4) Heat helps to speed up the breakdown of glucose and fatty acid. (5) Fat burns more easily in the heat. (6) Higher temperatures improve the function of the nervous system - messages are carried more rapidly to and from the brain to the spinal cord. And, it's a challenge!
Why do we only do these 26 postures?
Bikram discovered and developed this scientific series of postures and breathing exercises during years of research. The series has been proven to help people with chronic diseases and injuries of all kinds. Each posture prepares your body for the next posture.
I have back problems, knee problems, hip problems...is this for me?
Yes! In this beginner's class, everyone works to their own ability. You do what you can. It took years of abuse to get your body into the shape it's in; it's going to take years of practice to heal it. The combination of the heat and postures will help to strengthen the muscles around your bones and joints to give you more support.
Do I need to buy a membership?
No. You can pay by the class, purchase a class card (5, 10, or 20), or purchase a monthly unlimited pass, like a gym membership. All class cards have a 6-month expiration.
How often should I practice?
Bikram recommends practicing at least 3 times a week. We understand life can get a little hectic, so you do what you can.
Can I practice during my pregnancy?
Like most activities and exercise during your pregnancy, as long as you had a regular practice for at least a few months before becoming pregnant and as long as you've okayed it with your doctor, practicing Bikram yoga while pregnant is fine for most people. But, every woman is different and every pregnancy is different. Please contact Heather to discuss your situation before coming in to take class. Click here for more information.
What are some of the benefits of this type of yoga?
Increased strength and muscle tone, increased flexibility, increase in energy and vitality, reduction of stress and the ability to handle stress better, reduced blood pressure, better circulation, weight loss or gain (depending on what you need), healthier joints, a stronger immune system, better posture, and better balance to name a few. Go to the postures and benefits page to learn more about the benefits of the specific postures.
Is this a good cardiovascular workout?
Yes. The 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises work your heart and lungs by bringing your heart rate up during the first half of the class (and keeping it there) and by bringing your heart rate quickly up, and quickly back down (like interval training) during the second half of the class. These methods of training strengthen your cardiovascular system.
I feel dizzy and nauseous during class. Is that normal?
It is very normal to feel dizzy and nauseous during class. Most of us aren't used to exercising in 105 degree heat. Dehydration could also be a factor. Nutritionists recommend drinking 64-80 ounces of water a day. In the heated room, your body needs adequate amounts of water to allow perspiration to release heat from your body as you practice. It is recommended that you consume at least another 64 ounces when practicing. And, some sweat more than others.
Bikram yoga is also very cleansing. The release of toxins you experience during class could have you feeling dizzy or nauseas as well. The more you practice, the more those feelings will start to disappear. Everyone adjusts at different time frames. Try to relax after class, drink water, rest, and come back the next day!
